So... I've been quiet a while, partly because of distractions like cake making, but also because of finding skin tones tiring to work on. Building them up with the Scalecolour flesh tones gives a lovely result, but it takes ages. To avoid getting even more sick of this, I've wandered off into painting the Butcher's Guild captain, Ox, entirely in red (because en camaieu seemed like fun). And it has been, a few hours this afternoon got a lot of his upper body sorted out with no fights trying to get colours looking realistic. Instead, I can just think about light and shape and enjoy myself with it.

Oh, and I have one of Joe’s Fates on the prep table being cleaned up and assembled, she’ll be my next fancy project :)

Cheers Oog, it’s been a fun diversion :)

So much so that I might keep going with it on the rest of the butchers guild, practicing my skills at defining bulk and getting focal points right.

I think I'm done with Ox, although I haven't sorted out his basing yet...

I've been doing more red painting, this time I have pictures of a load of stages because someone was daft enough to ask me how I did it...

Palette (before and after a session, though not the same session. Still, you can see the colours I've used):

The last two pictures are my favourite part of this, because the second to last one is him after I finished the basic paintjob and the last one is after I went back and cleaned up the focal points a bit. I think I'm learning useful things about focus doing this :)

Eventual progress! Took a few goes to get the skin right, but eventually I got there:

Although it seems a bit blurry to me...

Been a while, but I've finally gone back to Penthesilea and made progress. Not finished, but getting close. Then there's just a stupidly huge base and the Maruts to strip and paint to finish it all off...

Cheers Griff! She is annoyingly tiny, sometimes I can’t even make out what I’m trying to paint until I get the first colours on...

    Hooray, she's finished!
Well, sort of. She needs a matte spray because the inks make things weirdly shiny, and the base needs doing (and it'll have to be huge as she'll be paired up on it with the Maruts). But she's fully painted at least. I got two photos before my camera battery died, may take more later in the week.

I really need to start work on the base, and dig out the maruts...

Change of pace - lately I've been playing kill team (and converting up a team of Tau, who I'll paint one day...). It requires a fair bit of terrain though, and while the box set came with plenty it's a rather dull tan colour. So I've decided to use all that plastic to get some proper airbrush practice in, learn to use air pressure and paint thickness to my advantage, and try some weathering. Course, it being a whole load of masking and overspray, this is how it looked when I finished:

Fortunately, some careful drybrushing of metals and demasking left me with this:

Still needs some tidying up around the edges, various details hand painting, and then a decent sealing coat and matte before final weathering, but I think it's pretty solid for an early try :)

Before your final matt coat have some fun with oils as they run better on the gloss, for things like a pin wash for ground in dirt in the crevices/nooks/ crannies, etc, streaking grime, moss and all that good stuff.Tamiya flat black is awesome for carbonation. Best bit is there's no right answer as it's your ruin :)

How do you find the oils for drying time? I’m guessing they’re pretty thin, so it’s not months :D
I have a whole stack of oil painting gear, so it’s definitely something I can play with alongside the powders, paints and ghost tints. But I don’t want to accidentally matte coat over wet oils!

Pretty much as soon as the turps/spirit/sansodor is dry I slap on a top coat of matt or satin varnish to seal it in - so far every thing seems to have stayed in place, even on gaming pieces.

Ah nice, I guess it’s such a small amount of oil compared to the spirit that there’s not much of the oil itself left!
Hopefully get to that this week, so I can use them Wednesday :D

Managed to finish them the other week, just realised I'd totally forgotten to post them!
